According to forecasters with NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 through November 30, is expected to be an “above normal” season with 13 to 20 named storms, including 3 to 5 major hurricanes (category 3, 4 or 5; with winds of 111 mph or higher).
These tips will keep you comfortable and your AC protected in the event of a hurricane:
Clear and Cover
Prior to the storm, bring in any outdoor tables, chairs or other items that could become airborne and cause damage to the AC System. You can even cover the outside unit with a tarp in order to keep it free from flying leaves, dirt and other debris, but make sure to remove the covering before you turn the unit back on!
Cool Down Your House
Before the threat of the storm is imminent, try cooling your house as much as possible so you are comfortable for a while after you turn off your AC System.
Turn Off the Power
Nearly 90% of all electrical system damage occurs when the AC is left on during a thunderstorm or hurricane. You may have to tolerate a bit of heat and humidity when you turn off your AC but leaving it on could cost you thousands of dollars in repairs.
Wait 20 Minutes
Keep the AC off until the storm passes and don't be in a rush to turn it back on. In the event of flooding, don’t restore power to the equipment until it is completely dry and you are certain that it is safe to do so.
Even if the unit looks unharmed, wait a minimum of 20 minutes after the power is restored to turn the AC System back on. Unstable or “dirty” power is common in the minutes after the power returns.

During the hot humid summer months it is normal for your Air Conditioning system to drain up to 30 gallons of water outside of your house per day.
As your Air Conditioning is cooling your home it is also dehumidifying, humidity is the water vapor in the air, your Air Conditioning pulls the water out of the humid air and dispels it outside.
Some systems require the addition of an extra pump to help pump the water out, especially when there could be sediment in underground piping.

Why you shouldn't set your thermostat above 78 degrees
As previously mentioned your Air Conditioning cools and dehumidifies the air, setting your thermostat above 78 degrees may save energy as the system is running less but it won't be running enough to reduce the humidity.
Warm humid conditions are the breeding ground for mold and bacteria. Mold can cause damage to your home, your Air Conditioning system, particularly the coils and can cause serious health issues.
Mold spores can cause allergic reactions, coughing, throat irritation and upper respiratory symptoms.

It saves money and reduces greenhouse gases. Here are some ways to cut down on heat gains and losses from your home:
Insulation slows down heat flow. In winter this means less heat escapes and in summer, it keeps your air conditioner from working overtime. In both cases, you have smaller equipment to worry about when building or replacing. Upgrading insulation is a sure-fire way to cut your energy use.
If air leaks in around windows and doors, you undo everything your insulation does. Known as infiltration, this air carries moisture in summer and low temperatures in winter, taxing your equipment and wasting energy. Sealing off these locations is a fairly cheap way to cut back on your energy bills.
In the northern hemisphere, the sun in winter sun shines from the south. The opposite is true for the southern hemisphere. Having large windows face the winter sun allows for sunlight to heat up those rooms, reducing your heating load. The downside is that more heat is lost through these windows at night and on cloudy days.
Curtains and blinds can reduce heat gain and loss depending on their insulative value. Blocking out the sun in summer keeps the space cool even if you have no shading from outside. Trees and foliage outside your window also reduce heat gain in the summer. If you pick the right trees that lose their leaves in winter, you still gain the advantage of winter sunlight heating your home.
Heavy curtains keep the heat in on cold winter nights, reducing losses from large windows.
Strategically placed overhangs can prevent your large windows from creating large problems in the summer. During this season, the sun is high in the sky. Overhangs that block windows from direct sunlight reduce the heating effect of the sun and keep your cooling bill down. The winter sun's low path across the sky allows sunlight to enter the room without being blocked by the overhang.
Glass performance has two main characteristics: heat transfer coefficient and shading coefficient. The heat transfer coefficient indicates how well the glass prevent heat from flowing through. The shading coefficient affects the sunlight entering the space. A higher shading coefficient keeps more sun out. Glass thickness, the number of panes and coating type all impact these numbers and vary between manufacturers.
